Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2024

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is back for 2024 and the challenge is celebrating its 15th year, will you take part in the event to help make it the largest and most successful one yet?

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It inspires pupils to make active journeys to school, improve air quality in their neighbourhood and discover how these changes benefit their world. The event aims to encourage more families to travel to school actively and help create healthier and happier communities.

On each day of the challenge, schools across the country compete to see who can record the greatest proportion of their pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school - Can we make a difference?

This year’s challenge will run from 11 -22 March 2024. This is a great opportunity for our pupils to help reduce air pollution and learn about the benefits of active travel for themselves, their school, their neighbourhood and the whole planet. It’s more important now than ever to continue to travel actively. Active travel is a great way to build physical activity into children’s daily routine. It helps them arrive to school more relaxed and alert and is great for their mental wellbeing too.

A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best away to bring down these pollution levels. Taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel and travelling actively to school instead of driving, is a great and fun way to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate.
